The Caruthers family businesses was started in the 1940's as a cartage company with one dump truck. Brothers Dorsey, and James Caruthers would haul rock and coal for their father Rufus Caruthers Sr. The brothers would drive to Coal City in Illinois and haul tons of coal back to heat homes in Gary, Indiana. (pictured below is a dump truck similar to the one owned by the family)
